Friends of Historic Rathdown
Friends of Historic Rathdown was established in 1991. The main concern of this community organisation was the preservation of the historic and archaeological site at Rathdown, just north of Greystones. The site is situated along the Cliff Walk between Bray and Greystones, an area of high scenic and historic amenity.
The Friends' aim is to restore Captain Tarrant's Farmhouse on site and to create a major visitor attraction there. There are many features on site including Saint Crispin's Cell (church on site), a deserted village and the remains of a Medieval Castle at Rathdown. The site gave it's name to the Barony of Rathdown, now incorporated into the district of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown. Archaeological evidence on site has dated settlement back to the Beaker period of c. 2,500 years BC.
